Introducing the new Changan Deepal S07

The electric vehicle market is no longer just about the household names we grew up with. A new wave of automotive giants is arriving from the East, and Changan, one of China’s “Big Four” car manufacturers, is leading the charge. While they have been a powerhouse in Asia for decades, their premium electric sub-brand, Deepal, is now officially landing on UK shores, bringing a blend of high-end tech and Italian-inspired design.

The Brand: Who is Changan?

With over 160 years of industrial history and a legacy of joint ventures with brands like Ford and Mazda, they know how to build cars at scale. In the current market, they have already established a diverse portfolio, including the tech-focused NEVO line and the luxury Avatr brand (a collaboration with tech giant Huawei and battery leader CATL).

However, for the UK and European expansion, Deepal is the spearhead. It represents Changan’s “EV-first” philosophy, aiming to bridge the gap between mass-market affordability and premium innovation.

Introducing the Deepal S07

The Deepal S07 is a sleek, mid-sized SUV designed to go head-to-head with the Tesla Model Y and the Hyundai IONIQ 5. Think sharp lines, a frameless door design, and a silhouette that leans more toward a sporty coupe than a boxy family hauler.

  • Key Specifications at a Glance: Battery & Range: The S07 features an 80kWh battery (nominal), delivering a respectable WLTP range of 295 miles.
  • Performance: A rear-mounted motor produces 215hp (160kW), propelling the SUV from 0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds.
  • Charging: While its peak DC charging speed of 93kW is modest compared to some 800V rivals, it can still top up from 10% to 80% in about 48 minutes.
  • Practicality: It offers a 445-litre rear boot complemented by a generous 125-litre “frunk”, perfect for stowing charging cables.

Technology & Interior

The cabin is where the S07 truly shines, feeling more like a high-end lounge than a cockpit. The centerpiece is a 15.6-inch “Sunflower” touchscreen that physically tilts toward the driver or passenger depending on who is interacting with it. You also get a Head-Up Display, which replaces the traditional instrument cluster for a cleaner, more futuristic dashboard.

What’s Next for Changan?

The S07 is just the beginning. Over the next 12 to 24 months, Changan’s roadmap for the UK and Europe looks incredibly ambitious. Bringing into the UK the Deepal S05, a slightly smaller, more compact SUV to follow the S07. As well as the L07 Sedan, for those who prefer a lower profile, a sleek executive sedan.

The Verdict

In our eyes, the Deepal S07 is a serious statement of intent. It doesn’t feel like a “budget” alternative; with its 7-year warranty, 5-star Euro NCAP aspirations, and interior quality that rivals European premiums, it is a legitimate contender.

While the charging speeds might not lead the class, the sheer amount of standard equipment makes it one of the most compelling value propositions in the current leasing market. Changan is no longer “one to watch” for the future; they are here, and the S07 is a fantastic opening act.
