Charging your EV

Home Knowledge Hub EV Charging

Transitioning to an electric vehicle (EV) is an exciting step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future. At Vavoom Vehicle Management, we believe that the journey doesn’t end when you choose the perfect car; it’s just beginning.

The secret to a stress-free EV experience lies in your charging setup. To ensure our customers enjoy the most seamless transition possible, we have partnered with Ohme, the UK’s leading provider of smart home charging technology. Together, we provide a “white-glove” service that covers everything from your lease agreement to the power in your battery.

There are multiple charging options for electric vehicles, from workplaces to supermarkets to at-home charging, and we’ve broken them down for you below.

Charging at Home

For the vast majority of EV drivers, the most convenient way to recharge is while they sleep. Home charging is not only more affordable than public charging, but it also eliminates the need to visit traditional service stations.

Through Ohme, Vavoom customers gain direct access to award-winning smart chargers like the Ohme Home Pro and the Ohme ePod. These aren’t just chargers; they are intelligent energy managers that communicate with the UK’s power grid to find the cheapest and greenest times to charge your car.

Charging at Work

Workplace EV charging rates can be subsidised to either some or all of the cost meaning the cost to charge your EV at work could be from 0 to 25p per kWh, which aligns with commercial electricity tariffs.

The subsidisation of the charging is up to the employer/facilities owner, as mentioned previously some might cover the full cost whilst others may charge a small fee to cover costs or use time-based fees to encourage turnover and avoid vehicles being plugged in all day if not needed.

Charging at Supermarkets & Service Stations

Whilst these are the most convenient charging options due to the high speed at which they charge, they are typically the most expensive.  Ranging between 50p and 75p per kWh, they are a quick and easy way to charge a vehicle whilst doing a weekly shop, but not the most cost-effective.

Understanding Charging Rates

One of the most common questions we receive is: “How much will it actually cost to run my EV?” The answer depends on where and when you charge. By moving from a standard electricity tariff to an EV-specific “Time of Use” tariff, you can slash your running costs by over 70%, and our partner Ohme integrates any smart tariff from any energy provider.

Charging Type Average Cost (per kWh) Cost for 200 Miles (approx.)
Home (Standard Tariff)
24p
£14.40
Home (EV Off-Peak Tariff)
7p – 9p
£4.20
Public Rapid Charger
50p – 75p
£30.00 – £45.00

UK Government Grants

The UK government remains committed to supporting the EV revolution, and there is significant financial help available for those installing home chargers.

As of April 2026, the Electric Vehicle Charge point Grant has been enhanced to provide even more support for specific groups. The grant now covers between £350 to £500 of the cost to get an at home charger installed.

Vavoom and Ohme work together to ensure you maximise these incentives. When we refer you for your installation, the Ohme team can help advise you through the OZEV application process to make it as easy as possible.

Who is eligible?

  • Renters & Tenants: If you live in a rented property with dedicated off-street parking.
  • Flat Owners: If you own a flat and have an allocated parking space.
  • Landlords: Residential and commercial landlords can claim for multiple properties.

On-Street Parkers: A new provision for 2026 also allows for grants where cross-pavement charging solutions (like gullies) are being installed.
