EV’s are now more readily available than they were 5 years ago, even last year and with the new government guidelines that there will be new normal combustion engines manufactured after 2030. Based on what we are seeing, we believe the BMW iX3, BMW i3, Tesla Model 3, Volvo EX60, and Polestar 5 are going to be 5 big hitters in 2026.
The BMW iX3: A “Neue Klasse” Revolution
The new iX3 is the first BMW built on a dedicated EV-only architecture, a futuristic SUV that prioritizes range, digital immersion, and ultra-fast charging.
The Core Specs (50 xDrive Model)
- Range: A staggering 421–500 miles (WLTP), thanks to new cylindrical battery cells that offer 20% higher energy density.
- Charging: Equipped with an 800V system, it supports 400kW DC fast charging. You can add 230 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
- Performance: The launch dual-motor model produces 469 hp, hitting 0–62 mph in 4.9 seconds.
- Practicality: It features a 520-litre boot plus a new 58-litre front storage ideal for charging cables.
Key Innovations
- BMW Panoramic Vision: The traditional instrument cluster is replaced by a display that spans the entire width of the base of the windscreen, putting data directly in the driver’s line of sight without a bulky cowl.
- The Superbrain: A new central system that integrates powertrain and driving dynamics into a single unit, promising the smoothest and most agile drive.
- Sustainable Design: The exterior moves away from the “big grille” era toward a slimmer, illuminated vertical kidney grille that pays homage to BMWs of the 1960s.
Tesla Model 3 (The 2026 Edition)
The Model 3 enters 2026 with a major win for traditionalists, after feedback on the button-only steering wheel, Tesla has reintroduced physical stalks for the UK and European markets. It remains the most efficient EV on sale, offering the best “miles per pound” of any car in its class.
The Core Specs
- Range: The new Long Range RWD variant is now achieving up to 436 miles (WLTP) thanks to upgraded battery cells.
- Charging: Access to the Tesla Supercharger network means you can still add 175 miles in 15 minutes with near-perfect reliability.
- Performance: The performance trim delivers a 2.9-second 0-60 mph time and over 500 hp.
Key Innovations
- Hardware 5.0: 2026 models feature the latest “Tesla Vision” cameras with a new front-bumper camera to help with parking and tight maneuvers.
- Grok AI Integration: The voice command system is now powered by an onboard version of Grok, allowing for much more natural conversations and complex requests.
- Cabin Refinement: All 2026 models now come with acoustic glass on all windows, making it significantly quieter than older Tesla models.
The Volvo EX60
Volvo isn’t playing around with the specs. They have explicitly targeted the BMW iX3, and on paper, they’ve managed to nudge just past it in almost every category.
The Core Specs (P12 AWD Flagship)
- Range: A class-leading 503 miles (WLTP). Volvo claims this effectively ends “range anxiety” for the average driver.
- Charging: Its new 800V architecture allows for 370kW–400kW fast charging.
- Performance: The top-spec P12 delivers a massive 680 hp, launching 0–62 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
- Practicality: A generous 634-litre boot plus a front “frunk” for charging cables.
Key Innovations
- Google Gemini AI Integration: The EX60 is the first car in the world to feature Google’s Gemini AI built directly into the dashboard.
- Multi-Adaptive Safety Belts: A world-first safety feature that uses interior sensors to detect your body size and seating position, instantly adjusting the belt’s tension.
- The Panoramic Sound & Views: The interior features an optional 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system with speakers built into the headrests and an electrochromic panoramic roof that can turn opaque at the touch of a button.
The Polestar 5
This is the production version of the stunning Precept concept. It’s built on a bespoke, bonded-aluminium platform that makes the car exceptionally stiff and light.
The Core Specs (Launch Edition)
- Power: The flagship Performance model is a beast, producing 871 hp and 1,015 Nm of torque.
- Acceleration: It clears the 0–62 mph sprint in just 3.2 seconds.
- Range: The Long Range Dual Motor model offers up to 421 miles (WLTP).
- Charging: Its 800V architecture supports 350kW DC fast charging, taking the 112kWh battery from 10% to 80% in about 22 minutes.
Key Innovations
- No Rear Window: Following the design of the Polestar 4, the “5” completely removes the rear glass. Instead, you use a high-definition digital rear-view mirror.
- Sustainable Luxury: The interior features Bcomp powerRibs™ (flax-based composites) and upholstery made from recycled PET bottles and reclaimed fishing nets, proving that high-end luxury doesn’t need to mean traditional leather and wood.
The VW ID. Polo
The ID. Polo is the first car on the MEB+ platform, which moves the motor to the front (front-wheel drive). This layout makes the car cheaper to build and creates an interior that is somehow bigger than the petrol Polo despite being slightly shorter on the outside.
The Core Specs
- Range: You have two choices. The entry-level 38kWh (LFP) battery offers around 186 miles, while the premium 56kWh (NMC) battery stretches that to 280 miles (WLTP).
- Charging: The 56kWh model supports 130kW fast charging, meaning a 10% to 80% top-up takes just 23 minutes.
- Performance: Standard models range from 114 hp to 208 hp.
Key Innovations
- The “Return of the Button”: You get physical buttons on the steering wheel, a dedicated backlit bar for climate control, and a tactile rotary knob for volume.
- Massive Storage: Because there’s no engine up front and the wheels are pushed to the corners, the boot is a giant 435 litres.
